Netflix、Facebook

Netflix and Facebook announced that they will reduce their data traffic in India to ease the pressure on telecoms networks in the country, where millions are using home internet amid a coronavirus lockdown, Reuters reports.

Netflix will reduce traffic over Indian telecom networks by 25 percent over the next 30 days, the streaming service giant was quoted as saying in a statement on Tuesday.

Facebook, meanwhile, said it will temporarily reduce bit rates, or cut picture quality, for videos on Facebook and Instagram in India, the company’s biggest market by number of users.

The moves come as India has enforced lockdowns across several cities to stem the spread of the coronavirus. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide shutdown from midnight for 21 days.

Amid the lockdown, mobile networks are likely to come under increased pressure as people increasingly use home internet to work and stream online content.

Earlier this week, Amazon’s Prime Video service said it has begun reducing streaming bit rates in India.
