TOKYO, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan on Wednesday said it had received more than 10,000 calls about scams related to the coronavirus outbreak since January, as unscrupulous people look to take advantage of the growing crisis.

Police said they have also been called to investigate crimes that have used the outbreak of the virus here as a basis from which to dupe people, Kyodo News also said.

According to police reports, criminals have tricked their way into the homes of the elderly who are mainly staying at home amid the pandemic, and robbed the victims of their cash or valuables, or attempted to defraud them.

Fraudsters have also tried to dupe people out of money on the phone and online, by posing as officials offering financial aid to people amid losses caused by the virus.

Other telephone scams, the police said, have involved fake coronavirus insurance hustles, that promise of the dispatch of COVID-19 testing kits and even work being undertaken to remove the virus from people's water systems.

Children have also become the victims of heinous tricksters posing as health officials and conducting inappropriate health inspections while they have been at home from school due to the virus, the police said.

"Never listen when the story sounds groundless, and please call your local consumer affairs center if you feel any doubt," an official of the national center was quoted as saying, with people also being urged to remain vigilant for online scams via emails and text messages.
